Re “Biden’s Own Circle Is Shrinking as Anxiety in the Party Expands” (front page, July 17):

The contrast is jarring: Joy that seems genuine, enthusiasm, confidence and unity of purpose at the Republican National Convention. And Donald Trump boosted to the status of hero as a result of his brush with a would-be assassin’s bullet.

Contrast that with Democrats in disarray, an enfeebled president and a campaign in denial, refusing to face a clear destiny of defeat. And now, Mr. Biden down with Covid.

I have tried to imagine how the Democratic National Convention in August will not resemble a wake. Can there be any enthusiasm at the convention with Mr. Biden as the candidate?

Democrats now find themselves in an 11th-hour crisis. I believe that it is likely too late to expect Kamala Harris or any new Democratic candidate to turn the political tide into a win.

To the Editor:

If President Biden, either voluntarily or with a firm nudge, withdraws his candidacy for re-election, the political conversation will immediately shift from questions about Joe’s age, incoherence and unfitness to questions about Donald Trump’s age, incoherence and unfitness. The Democrats could hardly ask for a greater gift.

To the Editor:

If President Biden manages to remain the nominee, I will cast my futile vote for him in November, but I will never forgive him.
